Australia Has a New Restaurant of the Year

17-Oct-2018 12:00 AM

It’s one of the hospitality industry’s most important nights - the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards. Celebrated this year at Sydney’s Hubert restaurant, the awards night was attended by Australia’s biggest names, all excited for the announcement of the winner of the biggest award of the night - Australia’s Restaurant of the Year.

Sydney’s Quay restaurant took home the award on the night, with chef Peter Gilmore and father and son operators John and Leon Fink accepting the award. It’s the fourth time Quay has won the Restaurant of the Year award. They are one of the most celebrated, visible and expensive venues in the southern hemisphere so the the win is well deserved, but this year they took quite a risk, closing the restaurant down for three entire months to renovate the space and revamp the menu.

Quay has held three stars for 16 years in a row - an achievement not matched by any other restaurant, and this was the biggest makeover they’ve had in decades, so there was a lot of pressure to take the restaurant to the next level, but with Quay taking out the top honour at the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards, it looks like the risk paid off.

The ceremony was held at Hubert - winner of the Restaurant of the Year award in 2017, and was attended by industry leaders like Neil Perry, Kylie Kwong and Andrew McConnell.

Other winners on the night included:

Ali Currey-Voumard, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery, New Norfolk - Best New Talent
